Director of the Office of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability

Tony Baylis is Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s director of the Office of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability (IDEA). In this role he is a senior management advocate for inclusion, people, and culture for the Laboratory. He is responsible for overseeing LLNL’s interactions and successful execution in building, partnering and collaborating with governmental, educational, industrial, community interests and other stakeholders.

Baylis represents the Laboratory on the subjects of Diversity and Inclusion, STEM, Outreach and Student Programs.

In January of 2024, Tony completed an 18-month assignment with the Department of Energy’s Office of Economic Impact and Diversity (ED) where he served as key member of the ED as part of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) team. In partnership with the deputy of DEIA, Baylis provided leadership on DOE’s outreach efforts for Clean Energy Corps.

Baylis joined LLNL in 2005 as a program manager and became the director for the Office of Strategic Diversity and Inclusion Programs in 2013. Tony is a board member of Computing Alliance for Hispanic Serving Institutions, Sparc Theater Company, and EmpowHer Institute. He is also an Industry Advisory for University of Florida Computer and Information Science and Engineering, an advisory council member of the University of California Santa Barbara Center for Black Studies Research, and serves as Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chair for Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (ACM SIGGRAPH), and as an advisor to several academic research projects and government agencies.

Baylis has decades of experience working in academic and technical environments and brings with him considerable experience networking with a broad range of academic, industry, government, and non-profit organizations. Prior to joining LLNL, he spent 17 years at the University of Illinois.

When not at work, Baylis enjoys exercise, travel and spending time with his children.
