Jay Gupta
Dr. Jay Gupta is a Professor of Physics at The Ohio State University, where he has been a faculty member since 2004. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2002, following dual B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1996.
Dr. Gupta's research group focuses on studies of problems in surface nanoscience with the scanning tunnleing microscope. Systems of interest include 2D materials, molecular thin films, and semiconductors. His work has been published in leading scientific journals, contributing to advancements in the understanding of van der Waals materials, defect engineering, and ferromagnetism at the atomic scale. His group is also actively working to expand the capabilities of STM by adding complementary methods such as ultrafast optical spectroscopy and spin resonance.
Dr. Gupta has helped lead the Ohio State Physics Bridge program since its inception in 2014. This program is designed to support underrepresented students in pursuing PhD studies through enhanced mentoring and academic support. As Director of the NSF-funded Quantum Graduate Interdisciplinary Program (QuGIP), Dr. Gupta is also actively involved in interdisciplinary education in quantum information science. His collaborative efforts extend to various NSF partnerships aimed at enhancing educational opportunities in materials science for diverse populations, including NSF PREM and NSF EXPAND-QISE programs.
On a personal note, Dr. Gupta is an avid cyclist and whistler.
