
Gibor Basri
Professor of Astonomy
Gibor Basri received a B.Sc. in Physics from Stanford University and Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He joined the faculty of the UC Berkeley Astronomy Department in 1982 and became a full professor in 1994. He studies star formation and stellar magnetic activity, and was a discoverer of and expert on brown dwarf stars. A user of large telescopes, he was also a Co-Investigator on NASA’s Kepler exoplanet mission. His over 200 papers have more than 20,000 citations. His extensive work on diversifying STEM and the academy led to his becoming the campus’s founding Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion from 2007-2015. Though officially retired, he is still very active in faculty, research, and DEI activities.
